Breaking Bad, Again?
I won't be giving any spoilers, and I'm going to be as vague as I can and still share my thoughts. If you've seen the series, Breaking Bad, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
Have you heard the news? I haven't heard a lot about it. I've read one article about it. Apparently, Vince Gilligan, the show's creator, says that what we thought happened in the last episode didn't quite end how we thought it did. I suppose there was no absolute proof, only an assumption that the path we were lead down had an obvious conclusion. As far as I know, every fan was okay with that. It was fitting. It felt right.
I would put Breaking Bad in my very undefined top ten favorite shows of all time. (LOST being number one. Peace be upon it.) The show had a very clear focus on what it was about and what it aimed to do, and it was still unpredictable and edgy. There is a lot of praise out there for this show and for Bryan Cranston, so I'll spare the choir a longer speech. If you've seen enough of the show, I assume you'll agree.
My wife and I have been enjoying the show's spin-off, Better Call Saul. It's a prequel of sorts that just finished its second season earlier this year. It follows a supporting character's life before the time span of Breaking Bad. It has the same style and feel as the original and adds nicely to the world that Mr. Gilligan created. Jimmy, aka Saul, is a pretty great character to explore further. We look forward to seeing how this show progresses, developing the character, Jimmy, into who we know him as in Breaking Bad. Good "call" on creating this show. *Giggle*
All's well then, right?
I'm not so sure that Breaking Bad coming back is a good idea. It hurts my brain to understand why. In the article, Vince says that bringing it back was always his plan, and it's not about the money but about the story he wants to tell. I'm a big fan of creative types taking risks and fulfilling their visions regardless of the fallout or lack of enthusiasm. But, it doesn't mean I have to like it. Will I watch it IF it is in fact a thing that's going to happen? It'd be hard not to. However, I will probably be highly critical of where it goes. I suspect many people will be the same.
And that takes me back to my original point; part of what makes Breaking Bad so great is its assumed end. The whole show from beginning to end was a beautiful tragedy, a complete story, and now, I don't know. I'm a fan of a story not ending how it's "supposed to." There are plenty of those that do fit a mold. Fairy tales are supposed to end happily ever after, blah blah blah. The ending to Breaking Bad was sad but satisfying, bittersweet and deserved. Once you saw it happen, you realized it had to end that way. Walt was a guy who broke bad, and we all loved it (and occasionally hated to love). In the end, his life caught up with him. His fate was authentic.
So, I wait and hope that IF it does return, it will be greater than I can imagine. With that kind of attitude, it'll probably be a disappointment. We shall see.
Or, maybe it was all a hoax, which it actually was. So, be careful. The internet is dark and full of terrors.
Now go watch Breaking Bad if you haven't already, and then watch Better Call Saul. Hopefully, my check from Vince shows up shortly.
